Alan retired in July 2009 having been a Senior Lecturer in Tourism Management at Leeds Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom for seventeen years.  Prior to this, he was Public Relations and Marketing Officer, Calderdale Inheritance Project (Urban Regeneration), moving over from his post as Tourism Officer, Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council.

He has also been Director, Society for the Interpretation of Britain's Heritage, has worked on Museum Interpretation for a leading commercial design company in Leeds, and Head of Interpretation, Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust.

He keeps in touch with a very large number of ex-students from the University and can be found on Facebook and Friends Reunited and continues his interest in Tourism Management and the historical and social aspects of Tourism at his website.
